The Thornton Burgess collection is one of our families favorite collection of books. The adventures of all the animals & being able to talk about their environment and share true facts , doesn’t only capture the attention of my children but the little child in me. To be curious about the next chapter…. You know that you started a delicious adventure of your own.
One of our favorites is The Adventures of Jerry Muskrat. It is a story of Jerry, a young muskrat, and his adventures in escaping the Farmer and his son. Jerry Muskrat saves the Laughing Brook and his home at the Smiling Pool from drying up. When we finished reading the adventure of Jerry muskrat, Oh how happy we were to know that the smiling pool would be ok, that our new lovely friends would be able to live in their home. What excitement and adventure.
Well, I wanted to share the first time we went to the marshes at our National park!! We were surrounded by a beautiful path , with trees on both sides of the path, and one side of the path has a canal running into a huge pond of water.
Lilly pad galore!!
From that point on this became our smiling pool. We got to see our lovely Jerry Muskrat as he swam across the canal. Grandfather frog was there and his many relatives. We had such a marvelous time watching dragonflies landing on the Lilly pads with there beautiful blue color.
Since that first time, we got to experience the marshes trough all the seasons and we absolutely love it. This last winter we got to feed black capped chickadees out of our hands. They just followed us as we walked the path. Oh what a delight it was for all of us.
Just think about how wonderful it is for our children to experience this kind of nature surrounding them. Their pockets filled with goodies from the outdoors. To learn this way is a self sustaining education.
